Which modules do I (still) have to take in order to successfully graduate?
Information on which modules from which areas you have to take and to what extent, can be found in the version of the syllabus and examination regulations (Studien- und Prüfungsordnung SPO) applicable to you. Which version applies to you is usually determined by the semester in which you commenced your studies.
Particularly the tables listed in the appendix of the SPO are helpful for choosing your modules.
Example SPO Mechatronics 2024
- Table 1 lists all modules of the orientation phase (semesters 1 and 2). You have to take all of them.
- Table 2 lists all modules of the foundation course. You have to take all of them.
- Table 3 lists all the compulsory modules and elective modules (W.1, W.2, W.3, Prak.V) in the specialization phase.
Example SPO Mechatronics 2018
- Paragraph 1 of the appendix lists all modules of the first two semesters. You have to take all of them.
- Paragraph 2 of the appendix lists all the subject-specific modules for your in-depth studies (semesters 3 through 7). You have to take at least 73 CP worth of modules. You can also take all of the modules in the table (97 CP). The credit points of the modules (73-97 CP) is also listed as a sum at the end of the table.
- Paragraph 3 of the appendix lists the exams regarding the practical year, the required elective modules and the bachelor’s thesis.
- Your required elective modules must amount to 8-32 CP. The list of courses will be announced through a notice (Marked with an „X“ in the mechatronics column). If you want to take a course not listed there, you have to get approval (see also: What possibilities for electables do I have?). Up to 4 CP of the required elective modules can be earned through AW-courses (see footnote 8).
In order to successfully graduate, you have to have earned 210 CP. In order to determine missing modules, the following procedure can be helpful:
- Make a list with all passed modules or parts of modules.
- Assess, whether you passed all the parts of those modules which consist of more than one.
- CP for a module are only awarded when you have successfully passed all of the parts. For example, you will only be awarded the 7 CP for the module control engineering if you passed the written examination and the practical course. Partial credits (e.g. 5 credits after passing the written examination) will not be awarded.
- Match the modules to the groups as described in the SPO:
- orientation phase
- foundation course
- practical semester
- required elective modules
- bachelor’s thesis
- Check for each group, whether you have earned any credits.
- Choose your future modules according to the guidelines for each group and with the goal of having earned at least 210 CP at the end of your studies.
- Please take note that not all the (partial) modules are offered each semester and that required elective modules may have to be approved (as stated above).
